If you’re just itching for an excuse to reuse that retired desktop PC or laptop sitting in your closet there here’s your chance. Today we’ll be looking at the basics of installing FreeNAS, an open-source DIY NAS. So instead of spending money on off the shelf options why not save yourself some cash and make use of the stuff you already have and get a super customizable network storage device to boot.

Nice post, I agree, no ZFS = not really an option for a good working NAS.
I’ve got FreeNAS running, version .7 and if it wasn’t for ZFS I probably would run a stock opensolaris install.
FreeNAS is an excellent product and the Web Gui is first class and easy to use, but without ZFS? No thanks.

Hi,

well, if it is really just because of the Linux userland and you don't need the advantages the Linux-kernel gives you, you really should take a look at nexenta (nexenta.org). It is a Ubuntu with Solaris kernel and ZFS is supported!

Cheers Jochen
